Flash dai campi gara: Seconda gara in programma del lungo week-end mondiale a Cozumel in Messico, con la prova Under23 femminile che ha assegnato il titolo iridato di categoria alla favorita della giornata, la campionessa tedesca Laura Lindemann. Doppietta francese sul podio, con argento e bronzo, rispettivamente a Leonie Periault ed a Sandra Dodet.
Top ten per l’azzurra del TD Rimini Sara Papais con il 10° e 19° piazzamento per Verena Steinhanuser (Cremona Stradivari).
La vittoria della Lindemann, già campionessa del mondo junior lo scorso anno e recente 28^ ai Giochi di Rio, conferma il talento della giovane tedesca all’esordio della categoria, davanti alla francese Perialut che si ripete quest’anno, con l’argento al collo conquistato nel mondiale U23 del 2015 ed alla medaglia di bronzo, l’altra francese Dodet, che ha al suo attivo un’altra medaglia mondiale, quello vinta con il terzo posto nella rassegna iridata universitaria disputata ad agosto scorso in Svizzera.
Il podio si è deciso tutto nella frazione finale dei 10km a piedi: nuoto iniziale con 5 atlete in fuga – Rueda, Coldwell, Lopes, Kingma, Gorbunova - poi una caduta che ha ridotto a 3 le leader della prima parte della frazione ciclistica (cadute Lopes e Rueda); a circa a metà percorso in bici, le atlete in testa sono state riprese dalle inseguitrici ed il resto della frazione ciclistica ha visto condurre 12- 15 atlete, tra loro anche la nostra Sara Papais. Uscite dalla T2, la Lindemann ha spinto subito ed è volata, iniziando il suo progressivo avanzamento per poi concludere la sua bella frazione a 15'' di vantaggio sulle avversarie.
Sara Papais al traguardo che racconta la sua 10^ posizione mondiale:
“La gara nel nuoto è stata subito con una fuga di cinque atlete, io ero nel gruppo dietro; appena salita in bici, abbiamo fatto un po’ di fatica nelle curve perché il terreno era scivoloso, ci sono state alcune cadute, c’era molta tensione ma sono comunque riuscita a restare agganciata al gruppo e man mano si recuperava lo svantaggio iniziale dalle fuggitive. La gara in bici è stata davvero pericolosa, ad ogni giro cadevano atlete ma sono rimasta fino alla fine in gruppo. Ho avuto qualche incertezza in T2 perché anche là il fondo era scivoloso ed ho rischiato di cadere, ma mi sono subito ripresa ed ho iniziato la corsa. Una corsa molto calda, ero molto stanca ma sono comunque riuscita ad agguantare il 10° posto”.
Verena Steinhauser: “Gara oggi molto dura e con molto caldo: sono uscita leggermente attardata a circa 1 minuto dal gruppetto di testa e mi sono inserita subito dietro tra le inseguitrici, abbastanza bene, ma purtroppo una caduta in bici mi ha fatto perdere il mio gruppo che poi si è riunito con la testa della gara; sono rimasta con altre due atlete, abbiamo cercato di rientrare ma non siamo riuscite a recuperare, la corsa è stata lunghissima ho sofferto molto il caldo, peccato, è stata comunque una bellissima esperienza”.

Leonie Periault (FRA), who scored silver in the U23 race last year, repeated her silver after a heated battle with Lindemann on the run. France took home another medal when Sandra Dodet crossed over with bronze. The women started the day just after the sun rose with a one-lap 1500m swim. With the current flowing in their favor, six women used the tides to push out in front for a 20-second advantage out of the water. The group included Brits Sophie Coldwell and Georgia Taylor-Brown, as well as Mexico’s own Lizeth Rueda Santos. Coldwell, together with the Netherland’s Maya Kingma and Russia’s Anastasia Gorbunova, both of whom also exited the water in the leading half dozen, cruised out of T1 with crushing speed to secure nearly a minute lead by the second bike lap. But with Lindemann, who just competed in her first Olympics last month, trailing in the chase, the trio’s lead didn’t stick. Although it took six of the eight bike laps, the 14-deep chase bridged up with two bike laps to go. The 17 ladies lit up transition with nearly two minutes over the rest of the field, meaning the eventual winners would coming from the top swimmers and riders. Early on the four-lap 10km run, Lindemann, Kaidi Kivioja (EST) and Leonie Periault (FRA) hammered out the fastest pace, leaving their competitors behind. Late on the first lap, Sandra Dodet (FRA) responded to the trio’s attack, surging up to make it a four-woman group leading onto lap two. With a penalty for failing to get all of her equipment in the box in T1, Kivioja opted to serve her 10-secon penalty at the second lap, which gave the French women and Lindemann a 15-second advantage midway through the run. On the third lap, Periault and Lindemann gunned it for gold, dropping Dodet. From there, it was a two-woman show, with the pair of Periault and Lindemann going surge for surge. They weren’t able to drop each other until the final 500 meters, when the German blasted ahead.
